Do you use AI to help with travel planning?
For my last few trips (Washington DC and our roadtrip through Tennessee), I tried using AI—DeepSeek and ChatGPT—to help provide some itinerary suggestions.
After feeding my AI prompt with some context:
Trip duration.
Arrival and departure times, dates and locations.
Things we are definitely interested in seeing or doing.
It generated a pretty decent starting point and structure for a trip itinerary.
But it wasn’t complete or entirely reliable. I still needed to cross check the suggestions with my own online research.

Here’s the AI Prompt I created for myself and have been iterating over the last few trips.
You are an expert travel agent and planner for {location}.
Help me build an itinerary for a {X days} trip to {location}.

8 Way AI Can Transform the Future of Travel and Our Experiences
The use cases for AI is endless.
These are some of the ways I think consumers and industry can leverage AI to improve how we plan and travel in the future.
I know many of these ideas are already incorporated in existing tools, or there are people and companies out there already building these tools.
1. Personalised Travel Recommendations
Using AI to analyse our personal travel preferences, interests, past bookings and past trips to suggest future travel destinations, accommodations, and activities.
2. Virtual AI tour guide
Use AI as your personal tour guide for a location or destination.
For example, if AI knows you’re an architecture junkie, history nut or foodie, you can ask it to share specific knowledge and insight on these areas in audio form (as if you’re talking to a real-life tour guide)
Instead of generic information, you get to hear and have back and forth conversations on aspects of the destination you really care about.
3. Smart Travel Budgeting
AI tools can help you plan trips within a specific budget, and suggest cost effective:
Activities
Accommodations
Transport
etc.
4. Real-Time Alerts
There are plenty of Apps (including airline apps) that already send instant updates about flight delays, gate changes, or cancellations.
But imagine if you had an AI tool that knows your whole itinerary—flights, hotels, activities—along with travel warnings, unrests, transport breakdowns and weather conditions around the world, and it can provide you curated alerts of possible upcoming problems.
For example, when Spain and Portugal had their national wide power outages. Sure you can get that information from the news. But a tool that pushes relevant information on a need to know basis based on your travel plans is 10x more useful for frequent travellers.
5. AI-Powered Travel Chatbots
A comprehensive chatbot that answers your questions, real-time recommendations for restaurants, help with booking hotels and activities and resolve issues instantly, 24/7 would be the dream travel assistant.
6. Predictive Packing Suggestions
Use AI to analyse weather forecasts for your upcoming travel destinations and provide you with a suggested packing list, based on your itinerary of activities and locations.
7. Personalized Deals and Discounts Alerts
Use AI to track your travel preferences, plans, activities, and then sends you tailored travel deals for flights, hotels, and activities that interest you.
8. Post-Trip Photo Memory Creation
Using AI to review the photos taken on your mobile and cameras, and turn them into a photo album you can print, or a video montage you can share with friends and family.

The future of AI and travel is exciting.
I don’t think AI will replace the travel stories and real-life experience we can personally share through conversations, blog posts or podcasts.
But I do think AI can save us time and help us plan our trips more efficiently by saving us hours of research and curation.
I’m most excited about using AI to personalise our trip based on our unique interests and preferences, curate real-time alerts based on our itinerary and using AI as a tour guide to dive deeper into the things that I really care about (not generic destination information).
